A garage door should reflect the style of a home. There are many design elements to consider for this often overlooked part of the home. The garage door is, for many, the most often used and viewed part of the home. Yet when it comes to the design, it is often ignored. The most traditionally used look is the "raised panel." Most home builders stick to this option when designing a home, but this standard option doesn’t have to mean standard design. Customizing the windows, adding hardware, and coordinating colors can give the entire house a whole new look.
Door Shapes - Nowhere is it written that a door must be just a wooden rectangle. Wooden doors can be rounded at the top - double doors as well as a single door. They can have a three-quarter arch or they can be double arch panel doors. There are all shapes and sizes of doors from which to choose when you begin to look for new custom exterior doors. Also included in the choices for wooden doors are segment top and Gothic top, true radius top and a raked top to mention a few.
Mahogany has a straight grain that is virtually free of knots. The color varies from a light to a dark brown with red highlights. This type of wood holds up well to the outside elements and is often used on boats. Red Oak is another option for wooden doors and is a fine choice. The grain patterns on red oak vary and the wood will accept most stains. The grain will pick up the stain and creates a wonderful look for an entry door. The color can vary from light to golden combined with a darker grain.
